Ashoka`s "EDICTionary"

Namaste, it is I again, King Ashoka and I have been working on my edicts (law like commands), and I think I should spread the word more widely than rocks and walls can. The 4 main values that my people must know are Buddhist values, general welfare, security, and justice.  Buddhist values preach the lessons of the Buddha and teach of love and respect, to be nonviolent, to not get attached to things of this world, and to act morally (to do the right thing).  The general welfare edicts promote the well being of the people in my kingdom and to make sure that my people are provided with needed shelter, clean, drinking water, good health and enough food.  An example of this type of edict is "On the roads...trees have been planted for the enjoyment of animals and men.  I have had ponds dug and shelters erected along the roads.  Everywhere I have had wells dug."  The justice edicts are concerned with fair laws for the people, these also deal with making sure people are treated with fairness and respect in the court systems and in jail.  The last type of edicts are the security edicts, which address ways to deal with the enemies of my empire and for people outside of my domain.  These provide laws for both peace and conquest.

The Great But Humble King Ashoka Bio

Namaste, I am King Ashoka of Mauryan Empire. I once ruled this land with brute force, my fearsome army, and my great need to make my empire the biggest and strongest by conquering everything that was in my reach just like my grandfather,Chandragupta. But after a bloody, gruesome battle I decided to reject violence forever and adopt the ways of Buddhism, for my kingdom, and for myself. Of course I could not become fully Buddhist because I had to be a practical leader of Maurya, I did this so I could protect my people from invaders (but not attack or invade others) and so there could be fair punishments for people that do not follow their dharma(killing could result in a unlike-Buddhist death penalty). To spread the peaceful religion of Buddhism I sent my son, Mahinda ,to places like Ceylon(now known as Sri Lanka) to convert the King to Buddhism. Mahinda did a very good job of this because Buddhism is the official religion of Sri Lanka (Ceylon)today, Buddhism also spread from India(Maurya) to central Asia and then places like Japan and Korea. To help keep Maurya a strong united empire I carved edicts(law like commands) on rocks, walls, and tall pillars where people would see them like roads and markets to make sure everyone knew my 4 main goals: Buddhist values, security, justice, and general welfare.
